The Bleasdale Family of Bridge Lane

A photograph of the Bleasdale Family pictured here outside their home of 42 Bridge Lane. John William Bleasdale (born in Farington) and Agnes Peel (daughter to a butcher and born at 52 bridge lane) were married in 1875 at St.Thomas church in Blackburn (wedding certificate below) Looking at the certificate, it can tell us that upon their marriage, both John and Agnes could not write.

The Bleasdale family set up living in Blackburn and it seems they had 2 children whilst still residing there (George b.1875) (Thomas b.1877) Both George and Thomas sadly didn't live very long with George passing away one year after birth and Thomas passing in the same year (I would guess stillborn) around the year of 1877 they would have moved to Lancaster and it seems they resided in Bridge lane, a place which Agnes would know well. John and Agnes would adopt a new born in Lancaster (Ellen Crossan- Bleasdale b.1877) and would later have another child a year later in 1878. (Robert b.1878) Sad news would hit the Bleasdale family again with the death of Robert, Passing only a year later. During the years of 1881 according to the census, it seems both John and Agnes were living back in Blackburn so I would guess they would of been lodging with Agnes Parents on Bridge lane with John still working as a cotton Spinner in Blackburn. The next Child to come along was Jane (b.1881 in Blackburn) and It wasn't long before they all moved to Lancaster on a full time basis moving into 42 bridge lane (pictured below) where John's occupation would be that of a lodging house keeper. Alfred (b.1884) would be the next child to come along and is seen here in the photograph below. Sadly Alfred would later go on to serve in the Great War and would lose his life in Gallipoli in 1915. James Bleasdale who was born in 1886 and passed in 1887 only one year later, would be the last of their children who were to lose there lives at an early age. Herbert. Hannah, Agnes and later John would soon follow with John William being the youngest of the Children (b.1897) John William wouldn't see his youngest son very much (also called John) as he would pass away in 1897. His wife Agnes went on to marry a William Stirzaker (who lived on China Lane) Agnes Stirzaker passed away in 1902. Young Agnes, the daughter sadly lived to the age of 14 and passed away in 1909. My guess is after the Mother passed away in 1902, the children will have been moved as it was common for the man not to look after the children especially when they wasn't his own.

At only age 14. The youngest child named after his father, John William was residing in Nazareth House, this kind of information would make sense as his mother had remarried but sadly passed in 1902, meaning his step father would of moved him here, which at the time was an organisation for orphans and aged poor.

Here we have a lovely photograph of one of the eldest children Jane Bleasdale b.1881 born in Blackburn but later moving to Bridge lane with her parents John William and Agnes Bleasdale. Jane would pass away in Lancaster in 1921

This is quite a unique photograph with the forces records I have added below which were attached to the photo, showing Alfred Bleasdale of the boarder regiment 1st battalion, who passed away 21st August 1915 aged 31. Also on the record is the status of Alfred's Parents which both Come under deceased which would tie in with his father and mother both passing in 1897 and 1902.
