Kingsway Cinema, Parliament street Lancaster

Kingsway picture house (pictured here in 1926) was situated on Parliament street in Lancaster. The cinema which was previously a garage opened on the 3rd April 1923 and showed it’s first two films “The Young Diana” starring Marion Davies and was supported by Lon Chaney’s “The Ace of Hearts”.

During the 1920’s, programmes from the Cinema captioned their headlines as Kingsway Super Cinema and would be quite popular amongst movie goers.
When sound came into use with films, it was not long before the Kingsway Picture House got on board with the new craze and in 1930, they soon fitted a British acoustic system to capture the full experience. For almost the next decade the cinema would still be popular amongst the public despite it changing hands several times throughout the 1930s.

In 1939, the cinema was owned by Unions cinema and unfortunately met its demise when taken over by Associated British Cinema’s (ABC).  ABC would soon close the cinemas doors with rumours suggesting a much needed restoration. Although the building was still listed in Kinematograph yearbooks up until 1944, it soon changed back into its original use of a garage. In later years it became a discount store, Comet store and today a Farmfoods.
